I’m no chemist. I happened on this article because of a friend from social media and I couldn’t help but laugh. Stuck in the middle of the supplemental data, reporting the total workup for their compounds, was this gem;
Emma, please insert NMR data here! where are they? and for this compound, just make up an elemental analysis…
And for heavens sake Emma, make sure you proofread the manuscript fully!
If you read enough scientific papers you see editorial errors that make it through peer-review, all the time. What you don’t normally see, however, is an PIs editorial instructing a student to fabricate data. (Edit: It has been pointed out in a few threads, and the comments here, that people from certain language backgrounds may use phrases like ‘just make up’ to mean ‘put together.’ )
I wonder how long it will take for this article to be pulled.
