Golden Rice field trial destroyed in Philippines.

Tragic news out of the Philippines; activists have destroyed a field trial for a particular Genetically Modified (GM) crop called Golden Rice.  This particular crop has two exogenous genes introduced, one from maize and another from bacteria, so that this crop can now generate and accumulate beta-carotene.  The accumulation of beta-carotene in Golden Rice provides a source of vitamin A to populations that lack it in their normal diet, and therefore predispose them towards blindness due to vitamin A deficiency.

While being a GM crop, Golden Rice has nothing to do with Monsanto and should not be confused with other Roundup Ready GM crops.

Lets hope the other field trials give this public effort to address malnutrition in developing countries enough data to move forward on schedule.  It would be a shame that because people are confusing Monsanto/Roundup with Golden Rice that this crop with amazing potential to do good would be held back from production and distribution.
